FIRST TIME APPLICANTS
FIRST TIME APPLICANTS
If you've never had a U.S. passport, are 16 or under, or aren't allowed to renew an existing passport by mail, you need to apply for a new passport in person.
STEP 1
Prepare necessary documents early
You should apply for your passport as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally, at least several months in advance. Passport processing times may vary. The U.S. State Department website explains what you'll need to bring with you.
STEP 2
Gather documents for your application package
You will need:
- Form DS-11
- Passport photo
- Evidence of U.S. citizenship & photocopy
- ID & photocopy
- Calculate passport fees
You can find a complete list of documents here.
STEP 3
Schedule an appointment to submit your application
You must submit your completed application, including citizenship evidence, photocopy of ID, photo, and fees, in person at a passport acceptance facility. You can find accepted locations at this website.
STEP 4
Track your application status
You can find instructions on how to do this online on the Department of State website.
