Passport Renewal Applicants

You are eligible to renew your passport via mail if the following are true about your most recent U.S. Passport:

  • It is undamaged and can be submitted with your application.
  • It was issued when you were age 16 or older.
  • It was issued within the last 15 years.
  • It was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change.

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

STEP 1

Ensure your eligibility to renew by mail

You can see the above list of requirements and find more information here.

STEP 2

Gather documents for your application package

You will need:

- Form DS-82

- Passport photo

- Passport renewal fees

- Most recent passport

- Envelope and correct mailing address

You can find a complete list of documents here.

STEP 3

Mail your completed application

If you live in the United States, the Department of State requires you to use the United States Postal Service (USPS) to mail your renewal application and supporting documents.

STEP 4

Track your application status

You can find instructions on how to do this online on the Department of State website.
