What is a visa?
A visa is a document that gives you permission to enter a foreign country. In some cases a visa is required, while in others it is not.

Remember!!! The visa is issued by the embassy or consulate of the country you wish to visit.

Do I need a visa to participate in a GlobalEd program?
As a student participating in a GlobalEd program, you may need to request a student visa. This will depend on your citizenship, the destination country, the duration of the program and purpose of your stay.

For example, if you are a U.S. citizen and wish to go to Spain and participate in a GlobalEd summer program with a duration of less than 90 days, you would not need to request a visa. If you are a U.S. citizen and wish to go to Spain and participate in a GlobalEd semester program with a duration of more than 90 days, you would need to request a visa.

That said... contacting the embassy or nearest consulate is the best way to get the most up-to-date information.

When should I apply for a student visa?
If you need a visa, it will be necessary to apply and obtain your visa before departing for your study destination. You will also need to request the visa from your home country. In other words, if you are a U.S. citizen traveling through France and you wish to study abroad in Spain, you will need to go to the U.S. to request your visa. This is not negotiable.

If I need a visa, what documentation is needed to apply?
You will need the following documentation to apply for a study visa:
    • A program acceptance letter from GlobalEd
    • Admissions letter from the host institution
    • Proof of health insurance
Be aware that you may have to apply in person at an embassy. So, allow enough time before you intend to travel.

How long will it take to get your visa?
The range of time to process a visa can vary from just a couple of days to several months depending on the country and your nationality. Allow plenty of time for your visa to be processed.

Can you extend your visa while you're there?
The short answer is... it depends. In some countries you will find extending your visa is very simple, while in others it is challenging or impossible. In some cases, you may even have to leave the country to extend/renew your visa.
